Christophe Mathias, cello

Christophe Mathias frequently performs with ensembles and orchestras such as the Ensemble Modern Frankfurt, Ensemble Resonanz Hamburg, Ensemble Multilaterale and Ensemble Cairn Paris, SWR Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart and is a founding member of the ensemble Interface and Ensemble Mesostics. A musician of unusually broad interests, he was a semi-finalist of the Leipzig Bach, Stuttgart Domnick, and the Lutosławski International Cello competitions and received the Second Prize at the Epernay String Competition in 2003. He has recently performed in international venues and festivals for contemporary music such as the 45. Internationale Ferienkurse Darmstadt, CDMC Madrid, Hamburger Klangwerktage, Young Euro Classic Berlin, Kasseler Musiktage, ROTOR Festival, Klangspuren Schwaz and Transart Bolzano. In 2011, he appears at the Impuls Festival for Contemporary Music Graz and the Festival Cinque Giornate in Milan, among others.

A member of the 2008/09 International Ensemble Modern Academy in Frankfurt, he performed as a member of the Lucerne Festival Academy under the direction of Pierre Boulez in 2007/09.

Christophe Mathias began his cello studies at the age of seven. His principal teachers include Marc Coppey and Philippe Muller in Paris and Jean-Guihen Queyras in Stuttgart. He furthered his studies in masterclasses with Christoph Henkel, Anner Bylsma, Dmitry Ferschtmann and Rohan de Saram.
