Maiko Matsuoka, violin

Maiko Matsuoka appears regularly with the Ensemble Modern, as a founding member of the ensemble Interface in Germany and with the Ensemble Linea in Strasbourg. She has recently performed in major venues and festivals such as the 45. Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik Darmstadt, Ultraschall Berlin, CDMC Madrid, Hamburger Klangwerktage, Impuls Festival Graz, Quantensprünge ZKM Karlsruhe, ACMF Seoul, International New Music Week Bucharest, Aspects des Musiques d’Aujour’hui Caen, Champs Libres Strasbourg and Fondation Royaumont. In 2011, she appears in performance with the Talea Ensemble at Lincoln Center in New York City and at the June in Buffalo Festival. A frequent performer of contemporary music, she has worked closely with leading composers such as Georges Aperghis, Beat Furrer, Enno Poppe, Heinz Holliger, Brian Ferneyhough, Wolfgang Rihm, Helmut Lachenmann, Isabel Mundry, Liza Lim, Misato Mochizuki, and Joji Yuasa and conductors such as Péter Eötvös, Stefan Asbury, Ilan Volkov, Franck Ollu, Myung-Whun Chung.

In 1998, she won 1st prize at the 3rd Eto Toshiya Violin Competition in Tokyo and made her concerto debut with the Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra. She also won 1st prize at the 10th JILA Music Competition in 2005.

Maiko Matsuoka started her musical education at the age of four. She studied with Toshiya Eto, Angela Eto, and Kenji Kobayashi and graduated from the Toho Gakuen School of Music in 2004. She finished her studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt as a member of the International Ensemble Modern Academy in 2009.
